Apple company's meteoric rise, or should we say resurrection, from the ashes is well documented, and has become the subject of many case studies for many MBA programs throughout the world. It's no secret that Apple was one of the first companies to fully exploit the home computer market. It was also the most popular. Indeed, operatively we're discussing its conquest of an industry in the past tense. Apple almost went down with the advent of IBM, Microsoft, and other power players.

But in recent years, Apple is once again a dominant player in the industry, albeit, in another aspect of the same, that is digital music. Its planners have determined the increasing popularity and demand for digital music as well as the technology that makes digital music sharing one of the primary activities, however illegal some channels are, on the internet. Downloading digital music has become the second most popular activity on the internet in the past 5 years, next only to researching.

Hence, Apple came up with the iPod.

The iPod was revolutionary during its initial release. It's a portable music player for a time when their only competition was similar devices that play music via cassette tapes and compact discs. Apple's wonder toy played digital music by storing mp3 files from the internet which are transferred to its internal memory via USB cable. This offered a lot of flexibility and liberty for the user. For starters, he doesn't have to bring with him dozens upon dozens of tapes of CDs just to listen to his favorite music. Additionally, he has control over what songs to listen to, in what order they will be played, and how they will be described on the iPod's diminutive screen. The overall product is likewise very small, given the fact that it does not need any other media device to serve its function.

For this generation, Apple's new invention became the very definition of cool.

And this instantly gave rise to a market frenzy that caused shortage of supplies and forced Apple to open new factories just to meet the ever increasing demand. To date, the iPod has seen 5 incarnations from its very first model, with the latest one being able to play hundreds - yes, hundreds - of music videos, through a screen capable of great resolution, while the user is on the road.

If imitation is the highest form of flattery, then Apple should be turning red with the extreme praise it has received. Nowadays, thousands of derivative portable mp3 players have flooded the market. But Apple's baby is still the king (or queen) of the roost.

Why?

Because it's cool.
